Content Our Mission The mission of the MESA program at City College of San Francisco is to provide economically disadvantaged students who are majoring in science, technology, engineering or mathematics with the tools to excel academically, and to assist with transferring to four-year institutions in calculus-based majors. CCSF - MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) Program The overarching goal of the MESA program at CCSF is to recruit, retain, and successfully transfer economically and educationally disadvantaged students majoring in calculus-based STEM disciplines. Our approach is a student-centered model, where knowledge and information are personalized and contextualized and strategies are explored for students to optimize their learning. [533/our-mission-w1vhe-our-mission-gp1yt.jpg] Program Objectives Dr. Moore, the director of the program, has the philosophy of "empower yourself to empower others." All scholars that are part of the MESA family at CCSF are individually interviewed and vetted for this philosophy. Two of the primary objectives of the program are to: - build a foundation for success through the development of contextualized and personalized pathways into and through STEM, - provide research-based experiences for students that foster scientific inquiry, critical thinking and presentation skills. [533/program-objectives-orwng-mesa-pic1.jpg] Program Offerings The CCSF MESA program offers the following: - academic excellence workshops - academic advising/counseling - personal empowerment workshops - science-related career advising - access to research opportunities - access to scholarship opportunities [533/program-offerings-jerwk-mesa-students-doin-stuff.jpg] STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES By participating in MESA, students will: - Identify their approach to problem solving, dissect their process to obtain a desired outcome, and refine their approach to problem solving for optimum results. - Acquire techniques and strategies to improve their time management, expand their ability to manage anxieties, and develop a personal plan for self-care. - Determine the motivational factors that drive them to succeed in life, develop strategies to leverage these factors when they face obstacles and challenges, and increase their emotional persistence - Develop the ability to create a dynamic short and long-term support system that addresses their immediate and future needs that utilizes all resources (faculty, peers, companies, etc.) available to them. - Develop an educational plan that reflects their current aptitude and attitude towards success in their math and science courses. The student's educational plan will be adjusted on a semester basis as their self-efficacy changes, and will focus on preparation for optimal transfer to a four-year institution. How to Apply 1.
